Band Camp '07 - Day 1July 29, 2007 |
Pictures follow the text! |
It was a great first day of camp. Parents enjoyed the hospitality tent
(thank you Elaine Ray and Terri Leeman!) while the kids moved in. They
had a dinner of Subway sandwiches, chips, and a cookie (yum!), then it was
off to the field to set drill.
"Setting drill" is the term which means to learn where your locations are on
the field. They spend a lot of time counting and moving without their
instruments. They have binders with "drill charts" to tell them where they
need to be. Unfortunately, just as we got to the field, we got a short rain
shower that sent us back to the SAC and other locations for about an hour.
At dusk, we leave the field to return to the SAC to rehearse the music part.
Soon we'll put the music and motion together.
This year, we've added new "get to know you" games, led by seniors, and
aided by Kelsey Martin, a 2007 ADHS alumna who is helping put these together
for her Girl Scout Gold Award. The students looked like they had a great
time. See the pictures below for some of the games they played.
We capped off the night with parents serving ice cream sundaes, complete
with lots of toppings and whipped cream. Yum! Then it was off to the dorms,
with a quick dorm meeting, followed by getting to bed.
Several chaperones are taking pictures, and as they transfer them to the
webmaster's computer, they'll be posted. Keep checking back throughout band
camp!

After dinner, we just made it to the field before it started to rain. Fortunately, it was only a short shower; we were back out in an hour or so.

While the students rehearse in the main portion of the SAC, the chaperones convene a meeting of the minds.

Here students toss a beach ball with questions written on it -- they answer the question under their left thumb.
Some questions: Chocolate or Vanilla? If you had a yacht, what would you name it? What's your favorite color? Burritos or Tacos? If you were a teacher, what subject would you teach?

Another activity is to make a human knot, and try to untangle it without letting go of any hands.
